- You have been brainwashed into thinking that a low fat diet keeps your weight down.
“Fats are the enemy! Eat low fat high complex diets to stay lean and avoid heart disease!” This is the lie that kicked off the obesity explosion in the 1980s. Obesity rates went from 12% to 25% when people started eating ‘low fat’. Now the obesity rate in America is about 33%! The problem is that in place of fats, people ate refined carbs which turn to sugar and mess up your metabolism.
- Your gut is a mess.
You are 10% human and 90% bacteria, as hard as that is to grasp. For every human cell, you have 10 bacterial cells living inside you and they play a critical role inside your GI tract in maintaining your metabolism. A combination of childhood and adult antibiotic use, as well as a lifetime of the Standard American Diet has disrupted the balance of your gut bacteria — a shift that favors weight retention and fat accumulation. This new bacterial situation has become more efficient at extracting energy from food. So even though you do not think you are eating a lot, you are absorbing more from the food you do eat. This bacterial shift creates inflammation, which leads to leaky gut syndrome, which leads to insulin resistance.
- You have food sensitivities.
There is a very good chance that if your gut is a mess, you now have sensitivities to certain foods. Whether it be nightshades, gluten, dairy or many others, you get inflamed every time you eat! - You are insulin and leptin resistant.
This means your hormones are all over the place. Leptin is a master signaling hormone produced in fat cells. It regulates your metabolism and its levels are screwed up by surges in sugar – meaning carb intake – as well as caffeine. Once leptin and insulin are dysregulated, your adrenal and thyroid hormone levels change. See where I am going with this?
- You don’t really believe that you can be lean.
After swinging and missing in this weight loss game for a while, it becomes harder and harder to really believe that anything you do will work. It is easy to see how this could happen. Self-doubt becomes your new normal and it starts affecting other areas of your life. You become complacent and try to be happy buying bigger clothes.
- You are addicted to carbs.
When you eat sugar and complex carbohydrates, a massive amount of dopamine is released in the reward center of the brain called the Nucleus Accumbens. When you eat these foods often and in large amounts, the dopamine receptors start to down-regulate. Now there are fewer receptors for the dopamine and you need to eat more next time in order to get the same level of reward. Basically, sugar affects the brain just like drugs of abuse (cocaine and nicotine) and you are hooked.
- You don’t move enough.
Movement is life. Movement stimulates your muscles to grow and that is where your metabolism actually takes place. The more you move, the faster your metabolism will work. I know, I know – you HATE exercise. Here is the deal, we need to get you to not hate it so much as it can be a key to unlocking the door to your physical and mental wellbeing if we can introduce it slowly.
